NJ Endoscopic Intragastric Balloon

Obese patients who have not been able to lose weight using a variety of weight-loss programs, but have not had any gastric surgery procedures, may have success using a procedure called an endoscopic intragastric balloon. This is a medical-grade silicone balloon filled with saline (salt water) solution that is implanted in the stomach for up to six months. It must be used on a temporary basis, because side effects can occur if left in the stomach longer than expected.

The endoscopic intragastric balloon works by displacing stomach contents, allowing patients to eat less while having the sensation of fullness. It is important that patients using the balloon also start and maintain a program of counseling for nutrition and exercise, because they need to continue a healthy lifestyle after the balloon is removed.

The balloon may be more cost-effective than any gastric surgery. Unlike a surgical procedure, the balloon can be removed easily using the same endoscopic procedure used for its installation. There is a low risk of side effects as long as the patient can tolerate the balloon inside their stomach. No drugs are needed to support the patient’s weight loss program. Minimal anesthesia is needed for the endoscopic procedure and recovery is rapid.

There are some risks that the surgeon should discuss with their patients before undertaking the procedure. Some patients may not tolerate having the balloon in their stomach. Nausea and vomiting can occur after the insertion procedure. Patients must be willing to continue their lifestyle changes after the balloon is removed or they will probably not have successful long-term weight loss. There is a risk that the balloon can cause an intestinal blockage requiring immediate removal of the balloon. It cannot be used by patients who have had any other type of gastric weight-loss surgery.
